OS Seam Welder

General Construction
The front section of the welder is a rigid beam, carrying the head support and lower knee of the machine. The head support carries a hardened and ground steel actuating ram guided by eight (8) cam follower roller bearings for strength, precision alignment and fast follow-up.

This construction minimizes operating friction and improves welding performance. The upper terminal is insulated from the ram and is water cooled. It is connected to one end of the transformer secondary by a laminated copper band which rolls with the ram stroke, minimizing the flexing forces, and assuring long life of the band.

The other end of the transformer secondary is fastened to a copper face plate. The lower knee is clamped against the copper face plate by steel gib plates permitting vertical adjustment or removal of the lower knee assembly. The transformer is enclosed in a removable sheet metal cover.

All electrical control connections are made through a terminal box which is provided.

A remote heat "On-Off" switch can be mounted on the side of the welder head support.

In and out water manifolds with valves to control the flow of water through the transformer and other cooling circuits are available.

Grease fittings and lubrication instructions are provided with the welder.

Pneumatic Operation
The air cylinder for operating the ram has piston and rod seals especially selected for low friction characteristics. A solenoid operated air valve permits the use of controlled air on the pressure end of the piston to vary the weld force. Line pressure is used on the return end of the cylinder to obtain fast operation. The air accessories include an airline lubricator, airline water filter, air regulator, air gauge, solenoid valve and air cylinder speed control valves.

A pressure switch can be provided to prevent initiation of the welding current before application of full weld force upon the work.

Weld Bearings
The upper welding bearing is mounted on the horizontal surface of the upper terminal. The lower welding bearing is mounted on the cast copper lower arm.

Two basic types of welding heads are offered. The straddle bearing type has one bearing on each side of the welding electrode and gives maximum load bearing capacity. The cantilever bearing type has an outboard mounting of the electrode where required by geometry of the product being welded. Bearing caps permit replacement of any of the working parts. The electrode shafts are made of Class 2 alloy and bushings of Class 3 alloy equalizing the wear in the shaft and bushings and minimizing maintenance costs.

Cantilever bearings of the current collector type are also available. These bearings are anti-friction type design with mechanical alignment assured by tapered roller bearings and electrical current carried by copper alloy bearing rolls.

Welder Arrangement
The Taylor-Winfield bench type seam welder may be provided with two basic weld wheel arrangements.

1. For circumferential welding, the electrode wheels are parallel to the front of the welder.
2. For longitudinal welding, the wheels are parallel to the side of the welder.
